Woody Hayes was selected as National Coach of the Year and Ohio
State won the UPI national championship, but underdog Oregon put
up a gallant struggle in the Rose Bowl.
The Buckeyes rushed for 245 yards, and rolled 79 yards for a score
on their first possession. Yet they would not show that kind of
offensive precision again.
Meanwhile, Oregons passing game kept OSU off balance most
of the day. The Ducks tied the game at the half but missed a third-quarter
field goal that would have given them the lead.
Ohio State drove deep into Oregon territory and Don Sutherin drilled
a 24-yard field goal just 58 seconds into the final period. The
Ducks threatened twice after that, but lost a fumble and ran out
of downs near midfield on their last drive.
The Buckeyes were 9-1, having won their final nine games after
a season-opening 18-14 loss to TCU.
