This would be Woody Hayes final game, and it had a fittingly
fiery ending. Everyone remembers the 28-year OSU boss slugging Clemsons
Charlie Baughman after an interception sealed OSUs doom late
in the fourth quarter.
That overshadowed a spectacular performance by freshman quarterback
Art Schlichter. The Miami Trace product completed 16-of-20 passes
for 205 yards and ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns. His only
mistake of the game came on the Buckeyes final drive. Taking
aim on a short pass, Schlichter was intercepted by Baughman at the
Clemson 24. Baughman was driven out of bounds on the OSU sideline,
where Hayes seemed to help the Tiger defender to his feet before
slugging him.
Ohio State fired Hayes the next day. That ended a 28-year relationship
that included a 5-6 bowl record.
