The statistical battle was never in doubt as the Buckeyes moved
relentlessly against USC for a 403-261 bulge. Unfortunately, it
didnt translate into touchdowns as the Trojans took a 17-6
halftime lead and hung on to win.
OSU kicker Rich Spangler booted three field goals and freshman
receiver Cris Carter had a brilliant afternoon, hauling in nine
catches for 172 yards (a Rose Bowl record at the time), including
an 18-yard TD in the fourth quarter. That score cut the deficit
to 20-17, but OSUs final drive ended at the USC 43.
Quarterback Mike Tomczak completed 24-of-37 passes for 290 yards,
but tossed three interceptions. The Bucks had four turnovers compared
to just one for the Trojans.
OSU wound up the season ranked No. 12 by UPI. USC was No. 9.
